I'll be damned if that wasn't the coolest fucking cigarette lighting scene I've ever seen. Tony Chiu Wai Leung is the man.

    *GRADE REFLECTS 130-MINUTE CHINESE CUT*

“Kung fu: two words – one horizontal, one vertical.”

Perfectionist, tinkerer, victim of his opaque sui generis approach to cinematic storytelling – however you slice it, when it comes to the difficulties of getting his vision onto movie screens intact, this isn’t Wong Kar-Wai’s first rodeo. The first time that the prodigiously talented Hong Kong auteur tried his hand at a film with wuxia elements, it took him nearly 14 years to arrive at a definitive cut (“Ashes of Time” was completed in 1994, but the sands didn’t settle until 2008 when Wong produced the slightly shorter “Ashes of Time Redux”). Needless to say, it’s no surprise that his latest and most outwardly ambitious work…

A dream of love. Every biopic from here on out should've been required to have at least three showstopping kung-fu fights.

  • Review by Sean Gilman ★★★★★ 6

Sometimes I forget that Wong Kar-wai made a kung fu movie that's also a history of China in the 20th century that is as beautiful, weird, sexy, confounding, and expansive as any movie ever made.

  • Review by davidehrlich ★★★★½

"All encounters in this world are a kind of reunion.”

If Wong Kar Wai’s films tend to suggest the detail and potency of a short story writer — from the sweeping “Ashes of Time” to the jewel-cut “In the Mood for Love,” most of them are either organized into discrete episodes or extrapolated from planned anthologies — Ip Man biopic “The Grandmaster” is his one true crack at an epic. Although to call this achingly sad Kung Fu saga a biopic would be misleading in the extreme. For one thing, that word conjures the kind of dull linearity that Wong couldn’t do with a gun to his head. For another, “The Grandmaster” is less a focused story about the Foshan-born…

  • Review by Matt Singer ★★★½ 6

You don't need to know anything about Harvey Weinstein, Wong Kar-wai, or even this movie's history of multiple cuts to sense that *something* strange went on in the editing room here. No movie this rigorously composed has subtitles this artlessly expository by choice. There are stretches of this movie that are like the worst Hollywood biopic -- "And then this happened, and then this happened, and then this happened..." and a lot of its happened-ing in intertitles, not even onscreen.

When the subtitles aren't explaining stuff (stuff that's mostly unimportant anyway, since this is a martial arts movie AND a Wong Kar-wai movie, and neither of those things are particularly dependent on story), it's a gorgeous movie. Curiously, the best…

    The train sequence.

  • Review by cinemacl🎃wn 26

Just being able to sit through this insufferable bore should be considered an achievement in itself because Wong Kar-wai's The Grandmaster is no less than third-degree torture for its 130 minutes of story actually feels like eternity. As a biopic, it is horrible. As a martial arts actioner, it is laughable. And as a drama, it is absolutely motionless.

Conceived at a time when the entirety of Hong-Kong cinema went batshit crazy & started producing numerous films based on the life of legendary martial artist, Ip Man (whom the world identifies as the man who trained Bruce Lee), The Grandmaster differs in its portrayal of the Wing Chun master's life but I myself am not sure what exactly it was trying…

  • Review by George Carmi ★★★★ 6

Shoutout Nalbis for putting this on my radar. Really beautiful storytelling. A martial arts experience that feels like a meditative journey. It’s stunning aesthetically because Wong Kar-wai is the coolest dude to have ever lived.

  • Review by DirkH ★★★★ 6

Review is of the original cut

The Grandmaster is the most beautiful Martial Arts slideshow ever shot. It's just too bad that someone dropped all the slides and haphazardly chugged them back in the projector, messing up the order.

I am a huge Wong Kar-Wai fan and that is probably the reason why I am able to look beyond the flaws in this epic biopic. The story of the legendary Ip Man is one deeply rooted in Chinese culture. A glorious, martial arts film recounting the life of this legend, shot by a truly gifted director should result in an amazing film. Well, it does and it doesn't.

The Grandmaster is a feast for the senses. Each and every shot…

martial arts mastery is all of this, and more. understanding achieved through opposition, contraction, attraction, union. the times may change, the people may waver, the world as you know it may end, but the fluid nature of kung fu bends like a reed when it's windy and stays steady during a hurricane. wong kar-wai doesn't just make a film about martial artists: he films their philosophy in action, how each gesture of a hand or glance…
