Can Shia pray 3 times a day? ›

Shias Muslims have 5 mandatory prayers in a day. It's just that they combine the Zuhr & Asr and Magribh & Isha prayers to be done at the same time which results in 3 times. The reason that Shias combine the prayers is based on the practice of the Holy Prophet (pbuh) which is present in the Sunni books as well.

Dhuhr (midday)

Shia differs regarding the end of Dhuhr time. Per all major Jafari jurists, the end of Dhuhr time is about 10 minutes before Asr. Dhuhr and Asr time overlap, apart from the first 5 minutes of Dhuhr, which is exclusively delegated for it. Asr prayer cannot be offered before Dhuhr.

Shia mostly fast from sunrise to sunset, whereas Sunni fast from dawn to dusk. There can be up to 30 minutes of difference. Usually Sunnis break fast earlier, but Shia are only allowed to break fast when the Maghrib prayer time enters.

In Shia Islam, Salat al-Jum'ah is Wajib Takhyiri (at the time of Occultation), which means that there is an option to offer Jum'ah prayers, if its necessary, conditions are fulfilled, or to offer Zuhr prayers. Hence, if Salat al-Jum'ah is offered then it is not necessary to offer Zuhr prayer.
